Companies educate students about career choices and produce virgin graduates

The UR4Africa project, a non-governmental organization, is training students from some secondary schools in Lagos State in a pilot university preparatory program to develop skills in arts and crafts, robotics, public speaking, fashion and design. To celebrate the students at the end of the six-month program, participants were awarded scholarships of varying amounts.

Oluwabusola Ajayi, founder of UR4Africa Project and Public Art Africa, said the initiative aims to guide young people in their career choices.

Ajayi said the selected students from Lagos public schools were taught critical thinking, teamwork and achieving future goals.
“Between now and September, we will begin working with a new cohort of SS1 students and by the end of September they will progress to SS2 and move onto the University Preparation Program. We aim to cover other districts in the country and add other states to build a strong community of college-preparing students,” said Ajayi.

Thirty students from seven high schools in the district were selected for the project, said Abraham Adner, chief instructor of the college readiness program.

Adner said he is motivated by a passion for seeing young students achieve their goals through mentorship. He thanked his parents for their efforts and encouraged them not to give up on his ward.

“Our mission is to empower young minds on the path to tertiary institutions and they demonstrate an unwavering commitment to excellence. Ijaiye Ojokoro High School SS2 Arts Department who was overall best student student, Israel Oluwadarashimi, won the grand prize of N150,000, while other students received cash prizes ranging from N20,000 to N50,000.
