Bus carrying 46 pilgrims collides in South Africa, 8-year-old survives

On Thursday, a bus accident in South Africa killed 45 passengers.

A bus fell off a bridge about 300 kilometers north of Johannesburg in the northeastern province of Limpopo, crashing through the bridge barrier and catching fire.

The BBC reported that an eight-year-old child was the only one to survive the accident with multiple injuries.

The passengers were said to be pilgrims traveling from Botswana's capital, Gaborone, to attend Easter services in the town of Moria.

South African public broadcaster SABC said the vehicle lost control and fell off a bridge on the Mamatlakara Pass between Mokopane and Markeng, about 300 kilometers north of Johannesburg.

South Africa's Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga told reporters after visiting the site that the government would conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time,” Chikunga said.

“As more people take to the roads this Easter weekend, we continue to urge people to remain vigilant and drive responsibly.”

In his Easter message to South Africans, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged South Africans to “do our best to have a safe Easter”.
