British-Nigerian student faces deportation to Nigeria for making terrorist threats against UK university
Somtochukwu Okwuoha, a 26-year-old Nigerian masters student, faces arrest and deportation after a jury found him guilty of making terrorist threats against the University of Dundee.
According to the BBC, International Energy Student claimed to have recruited ISIS, a terrorist group, to help bomb the university and told staff that they planned to attack the city in a chemical attack.
Okwuoha was found guilty of seven charges and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month, December 2023.
Sheriff William Wood will also consider the Crown’s motion to order Okwuoha’s deportation to Nigeria.
A trial heard that Okwuoha told university officials he planned to commit a mass murder on the University of Dundee campus. Witnesses told the court how Okwuoha claimed to have a military background and be able to make bombs and release a deadly virus into the city.
One of the witnesses, Keith Mackle, 58, now retired director of student services, told Perth Sheriff Court he became aware of “serious concerns” in autumn 2021. He said staff members had received emails containing terrorist threats.
One said: “Expect a huge bomb explosion at the University of Dundee. I contacted Islamic State terrorists to plant bombs on campus.
“I can guarantee that staff and students will die in large numbers. 9/11 will be a joke compared to what will happen.
“Blood will be shed and flesh will be scattered.”
Furthermore, accommodation officer Shane Taylor told the court that Okwuoha accused him of being racist and said he planned to exterminate the Scottish people in revenge.
Okwuoha, a prisoner in Perth, was found guilty of threatening to murder university staff and committing terrorist offenses between December 2021 and June 2022.
He was found guilty of threatening to commit mass murder, using biological weapons, revealing details of his team to international authorities and claiming to have planted bombs. He was also found guilty of threatening to behead police officers and detonating bombs he planted at Dundee University.
