Breaking news: Senate passes student loan bill
The Senate passed the Student Loan Access to Higher Education Act of 2024.
The Senate resolution follows consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Higher Education Institutions and TETFUND.
The Committee Chairman, Senator Muntari Dandutse, presented the report in plenary session.
Last week, President Bola Tinubu submitted the bill to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.
The Senate Legislative Council expedited the hearing of the bill by suspending the relevant provisions of the Standing Rules and referred it to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.
Following debate on the bill, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Educational Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative work and a report within a week.
The bill aims to provide easy access to higher education to poor Nigerians through interest-free loans from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, which was established by law to provide education to all Nigerians.
