Amid controversy over the appointment of an interim commissioner by Benue State Governor Hyacinth Aria, the state House of Assembly has approved the nominee.

The approval came despite the Senate asking the federal government to withhold statutory allocations to local councils that are not democratically elected nationwide.

The Senate resolution is in line with a motion titled “Urgent need to stop the erosion of democracy and dissolution of the elected assembly in Benue State”, which was proposed by Senator Aba Moro in plenary session on Friday. became.

Mr. Moro stressed that the use of caretaker committees in place of elected councils violates the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Senate called on the Benue State Governor to dissolve the parliament, review the composition of the caretaker committee and reinstate elected officials.

However, contrary to this order, the Benue State House of Assembly approved 21 out of 23 candidates.
