Inmates at Jos Correctional Center in Plateau State staged a protest on Friday citing the economic hardships affecting the nation.

There are reports that protests began as soon as prisoners were informed that the size of meals in prison had been revised downward.

During the protest, inmates reportedly refused orders from detention center staff and even avoided breakfast.

According to Daily Trust, inmates gathered in the center of the prison yard, shouting at the top of their lungs.

However, they were tear gassed by detention authorities and forced back into their rooms.

Jos Correctional Center Comptroller Rafael Ibinuhi confirmed the development and blamed the protests on the rising cost of living.

He said, “The problem is related to the high price of goods in the market.'' Contractors in charge of food said that the price of food has forced them to reduce the size of food plates.

“So it is the size of the food that has caused the protests. I do not think the protests are necessary because the issue of food issues and the price of goods is a national issue that the federal government is already addressing.

“And because this is a national problem, I would like to believe that whatever steps the federal government takes to address this problem will be felt everywhere in the country, including in correctional centers. is.”

DAILY POST reported that a series of protests have taken place across the country due to the high level of economic hardship faced by the people.
