Breaking news: Chief Justice Edo constitutes a committee to investigate Deputy Governor Shaibu


Pursuant to a resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly last Tuesday, the state Chief Justice, Justice Daniel Okunbowa, has set up a seven-member committee to investigate the petition against the state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

DAILY POST reported that Congress served the notice of impeachment on March 6, 2024.
Lieutenant Governor Philip Scheib imposed a seven-day ultimatum to respond to the petition, alleging fraud and perjury.

Because the lieutenant governor allegedly evaded service of the impeachment notice, the House ordered alternative delivery methods through the state-run Observer and Vanguard newspapers, respectively.

This notice was published on March 12, 2024.

The House of Representatives last Tuesday passed a resolution in plenary session on March 19, 2024 directing the Chief Justice to establish a seven-member committee to investigate the allegations against the lieutenant governor.

DAILY POST reported that the presiding judge complied on Friday.
A statement obtained by DAILY POST signed by the Chief Registrar of the State High Court, BO Osawalu, states that the former judge's name is
SA Omonua (Rtd) Chairman.

Three professors from the University of Benin, UNIBEN, and Benson-Idahosa University, BIU, are also members of the panel.

The professors are Violet Aigbokhaevbo from the UNIBEN Faculty of Law, Boniface Onomion Edegbai from the UNIBEN Faculty of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, and Theresa Akpoghome, former head of the BIU Faculty of Law.

Other members are surveyors Mr. Andrew Oliha, Mr. Ogogo Ayodele Obias and Mr. Idris Abdulkareen.

Part of the letter reads:

This is based on Article 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Chief Justice of Edo State, Honorable Justice DI Okunbowa, and a seven-member committee, have issued a notice of impeachment against the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Investigate the allegations involved. Prince Philip Scheib.

The seven-person panel mentioned above is comprised of the following:
