Breaking News: ATBU: Police fire tear gas at students protesting the murder of an undergraduate student during a robbery
Tensions escalated at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ATBU's Yelwa Campus in Bauchi on Monday as students protesting the killing of their colleague were tear gassed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
DAILY POST had earlier reported that students had announced they would embark on a peaceful protest on Monday after Joseph Aghabaidu, a final year geology student at the university, was stabbed to death during a robbery.
The robbery reportedly occurred on Saturday night.
The 500 level geology student was said to have been returning to his lodge around Yerwa Tudu Market in Yerwa area on the outskirts of Bauchi metropolis at about 7pm when he was attacked.
The victim reportedly died from injuries sustained during the attack.
As a result, a protest launched by students on Monday was thwarted by police who stationed an armored tanker opposite the school gate.
The situation further escalated as students closed the gates, disrupting campus activities.
The authorities' attempts to appease the students were met with songs of solidarity.
