The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University's Yelwa campus in Bauchi has suspended the institution following student protests over the stabbing death of Joseph Agabaidu, a final year geology student at the university during an attempted robbery. Closed.
In a circular obtained by DAILY POST and signed by the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Haj. Professor Fatima Inuwa Abdullahi said the management had approved the closure of the university “for the first week, effective from Monday 4th December to Sunday 10th December”.
According to the circular, the aim is to prevent the breakdown of law and order while claiming that the protests were hijacked by hoodlums.
This circular reads as follows: “As you may recall, there was recently the alleged murder of Mr. Joseph Aga Baidu, his 500 level student of Applied Geology at Yelwa Kagadama Campus, which led some miscreants to stage a protest around the Yelwa campus. The peace was disrupted as a result.
“In view of the above, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has approved the closure of the university for an initial week from Monday 4th to Sunday 10th December 2023.
“I am therefore directed to ask all undergraduate students on both campuses to immediately vacate university premises. Failure to do so may result in appropriate sanctions being imposed by the authorities.” there is.”
DAILY POST reports that tensions escalated inside the university on Monday after students protesting against the tragedy were tear gassed by operatives of the Bauchi Police Command.
