Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has announced his administration’s determination to harness the agricultural potential of Lake Chad to promote agriculture in the state.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, said in a statement on Tuesday that Zulum made this known during his visit to Baga when he assessed part of the lake for agricultural use.
The governor also spoke about strengthening cross-border trade between communities in Nigeria and their counterparts in Chad and Niger Republic.
In his assessment, Zulum noted that agricultural activities are increasing along the coast, which will provide a source of livelihood for returnee communities that have previously relied on government support and humanitarian aid.
“We’re here to see how we can support large-scale farming. This town was destroyed by rebels and people have been resettled in the last couple of years.
“Therefore, we need to harness the potential of Lake Chad to provide livelihoods to our people.
“Our first objective is to consider how we can assist the Army and Navy in clearing the waterway so that we can begin boat travel from Baga to Chad, which will enhance cross-border trade and agriculture. ,” Zulum said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zulum Municipality has also approved the construction of a higher Islamic university in the border town of Baga.
The university, which has over 2,000 students, will combine traditional Islamic education with literacy, numeracy, digital and vocational education.
