Body of missing 16-year-old girl found abandoned in an open field after an unknown man demanded money from her family and threatened to kill her

A 16-year-old girl, Machaka Radebe, was found dead two days after being reported missing in the Free State, South Africa.

Machaka's body was discovered with a stab wound in an open field in Bloemspruit in the early morning hours of Monday 4 December 2023.

Machaka was last seen by her brother on the afternoon of Saturday 2 December.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, who confirmed the development in a statement, said the brothers were sleeping at their home in Rocklands and when her brother woke up, he realized that Machaka was not in his room.

“He tried to call her, but her cell phone was answered by an unknown man demanding money or his sister would die,” Kareli said.

Kareli said her brother called her mother and they reported the matter to the Kagisanong police station, where a kidnapping case was opened.

Police are appealing for information that could help with the investigation into Machaka's murder.

Meanwhile, Free State police are appealing to teenagers to stop providing or sharing personal information with unknown people online.

“We also wish to advise young women not to agree to meet up with anyone they meet on social media,” Kareli said.
