Bauchi approves N100b for 200km road project

• Parliament vows to pass Child Rights Bill
The Bauchi State Executive Council has approved N100 billion to construct 200 kilometers of roads across the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Usman Garba, told reporters after the Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday that the state government had concluded plans to begin the construction and rehabilitation of 200 kilometers of roads. Mr Garba said Governor Bala Mohammed had approved the commencement of the project.
According to him, the construction of 16 strategic roads across the state will please the hearts of the people. He said the project also includes two flyovers in the busiest areas of Umti and Central Market, with the aim of beautifying the city and decongesting it.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of State for Construction and Transport, Ibrahim Galadima, highlighted the project, saying it included the construction of 29 kilometers of roads in Voj/Gambar/Sala/Leré for approximately NOK 11.3 billion. .
Galadima said that NOK 20 billion has been allocated for the construction of the two viaducts, adding that the renovation of the 29-kilometre Dindima/Iasi/Maina/Maji road will cost NOK 9.9 billion.
He said that duplicating the 11km Kano road from Ningi Public Secondary School (GSS) to Guduba would cost NOK 10.3 billion, while doubling from the Chief’s Palace, Azare to Satreko roundabout would cost NOK 4.4 billion. He said it would cost a lot of money.
The commissioner further said the governor also approved the rehabilitation of the 29km Adamami/Dishina/Jamaare road at a cost of N6.8 billion and the construction of the 1.1km Bayara township road at a cost of N737 million. According to him, the renovation and upgrading of the Chieftaincy Palaces in Bauchi/Jamaale/Ningi and Das will cost N2.2 billion.
Meanwhile, the House of Commons has committed to passing the Child Rights Bill (code-named the Child Protection Bill) by the end of the year.
Speaking at an orientation workshop for members of parliament organized by Plan International Nigeria in Abuja yesterday, Speaker Abubakar Suleiman promised to accelerate the consideration of the bill in the coming weeks.
The Child Rights Act was passed by the federal government in 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. Since then, all states in Nigeria except Bauchi have enacted this law.
He said, “I am always embarrassed whenever I hear that Bauchi State is the only state that has not yet enacted a child protection law. We are here for a specific mission. We are committed to these issues and we want to let you know that the delay in passing the bill is over.”
