Awonih misses AFCON due to groin injury

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi will miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to a groin injury.

Awoniyi suffered the injury last Thursday during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

The 26-year-old was replaced by Terem Moffi in the 59th minute.

The striker missed the Super Eagles’ next match against Zimbabwe after returning to the club for injury assessment.

“Bad news for Taiwu. He has to undergo surgery and will be out for a number of months,” Forest manager Steve Cooper said at a press conference on Thursday.

“We will support him and try to get him back to health as quickly as possible, but this is a really unfortunate situation and a blow to him.

“He’s become an important player for us with the goals he’s scored and continues to score for us, but he’s a very nice guy, a good professional and wants to do well. It’s tough on him to get an injury like this because he’s desperate.”

Awonih has scored four goals in 11 appearances for Tricky Trees this season.
