Five people killed in Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident

At least 9 people killed in bus crash in Brazil

At least nine people were killed and more than 20 injured when a bus veered off a highway and overturned in northeast Brazil on Thursday, authorities said.

The Federal Road Police (PRF) said the bus was headed from Rio de Janeiro in the southeast to the tourist town of Porto Seguro in Bahia state when it veered off the road at around 4am (7pm Japan time).

There were 34 passengers.

Authorities did not provide details such as the condition of the injured or the nationality of the victims, but said the two bus drivers were not injured.

The mayor's office of Teixeira de Freitas, the town where the accident occurred, said on its website that one of the injured later died at a nearby hospital.

Brazilian media broadcast footage of a blue and white bus lying along the BR-101 highway.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world in terms of surface area and is highly dependent on road transportation, so bus accidents are common in Brazil.
