ASUU Gombe State University issues two-week strike notice

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU (Gombe State University Chapter) has given a two-week ultimatum to the state government and university management to address its demands.

In a resolution obtained by DAILY POST and signed by branch presidents Dr. Suleiman Jauro and Dr. M. Muhammad, the branch said it would consider other legitimate options if its demands are not met.

The Congress expressed concern about the state's economic situation, which is having a serious impact on the welfare of its salaried members.

“The Congress of the University Teachers Union, Gombe State University Branch, at its Congress meeting held today, March 28, 2024, extensively deliberated on issues affecting the health of its members.

“The Assembly frowned at the failure of the university authorities to address issues affecting the health of its members, which are currently affecting the morale of the university’s faculty and staff.

“Staff morale is on the decline due to the university's failure to address staff welfare issues amidst the country's socio-economic challenges,” the resolution reads in part.

The council pointed out issues such as non-payment of cumulative academic allowances from 2015/2016 to 2023, non-payment of arrears for promotion periods 2020, 2021 and 2022, and other non-payments.

If these issues are not resolved within the two-week deadline, the union said it will consider other legitimate options available to pursue its demands.

“Congress voted unanimously to give the University a deadline of two weeks from today to address the above issues.

“If these issues remain unresolved at the expiry of the deadline, the union will not hesitate to consider other legitimate options available to pursue its demands,” the council added.
