Appointment of OSIEC Chairman: Osun CDHR expresses concerns, writes to IPAC

The Osun State Chapter of the Commission for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has expressed concern over the appointment of Mr. Hashim Abioye as the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSIEC.

The Osun CDHR also urged the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) in the state not to suspend the appointment.

In a letter signed by Chairman Emmanuel Olowu and addressed to IPAC in Osun State and obtained by DAILY POST on Saturday, the Osun CDHR said that if Nigeria’s democracy is further strengthened, “Hashim Abioye’s dual affiliation “raises serious questions about his actions.” As the head of OSIEC, he has the authority to organize local government elections in the state, which requires him to be able to uphold the principles of fairness and transparency. ”

He also noted that Mr. Abioye’s appointment will have a negative impact on the credibility of OSIEC.

The Osun CDHR said: “It is clear that Mr. Hashim was not appointed to represent the interests of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but to promote the democratic process in Osun State.” he claimed.

“We wish to express our sincere concern regarding the recent appointment of Barrister Hashim Abioye as Chairman, Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC), which the Osun State Government pushed through despite your refusal to proceed in court. I am writing this letter to draw your attention to the concerns of: Statement jointly signed by you and your Secretary on Thursday, November 10, 2023.

“In line with our mission to campaign for the social rights of Nigerians, we wish to inform you of the actions of the Osun State Government and the inability of further action to thwart the process of appointment of cardholders. The fact that he of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also holds the position of Senior Special Adviser to the Osun State Governor is an aberration to the advancement of governance at the local government level and should truly be supported by all political parties. This should not be tolerated. Your body is going to see Nigeria’s democracy become stronger.

“Mr Abioye’s dual affiliation casts serious doubt on his ability to uphold the principles of impartiality and transparency as OSIEC Secretary since he is tasked with organizing local government elections in the state.

“This appointment was made because it is clear that Mr. Hashim was appointed to represent the interests of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and not to promote the democratic process in Osun. “The impact of this would adversely affect the reliability of OSIEC’s performance.”

“The acceptance of such appointments is a sign of submission of all political parties in the state to the ideology of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a sign that all other political parties have agreed to a single party system. I would like you to know that I am in a state of

“Furthermore, the progress of the democratic process is based on the level at which the opposition party can actively criticize the governing process with the mission of taking over the leadership of the state and the vision of governing the state based on the party’s ideology”; It would therefore be heresy for your party to be able to submit its ideology to the ruling party simply by accepting Hashim’s appointment. All signs point to the fact that he has been appointed to work in the PDP.

“We call on the Osun State Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to mobilize its members to support the removal of Barrister Hashim Abioye and stress the need for truly fair and unjust policies. We urge you to quickly address this issue in the interest of our democracy. – A partisan figure who meets all legitimate requirements to lead OSIEC.”
