American woman with rare double uterus gives birth to twin girls
A 32-year-old Alabama woman who was born with two wombs and was pregnant with both of them announced Friday that she gave birth to twin girls on separate days.
“Our miracle baby was born!” Kelsey Hatcher, who chronicles her story on her Instagram account doubleuhatchlings, wrote in a post.
She added that the girls “decided that they were statistically rare enough that they deserved a birthday too.”
Their first child, named Roxy Leila, was born on Tuesday at 7:49pm (0149 GMT). She joined Rebel Laken at 6:09 a.m. Wednesday.
Doctors had estimated a Christmas due date, but the sisters arrived just in time to be home with their siblings over the holidays.
Mother and daughter have now been released from the hospital, and Hatcher promised to share more details about the birth in the future.
Hatcher knew she had uterine didelphys since she was 17 years old. This is a rare congenital disease that is thought to affect approximately 0.3 percent of women born.
During her routine eight-week ultrasound in May, the massage therapist and mother of three at the time discovered not only that she was pregnant with twins, but also that there was something in each uterus. I learned that there was a fetus.
Pregnancies in both uteruses are extremely rare, said Shweta Patel, an obstetrician and gynecologist who cared for Hatcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Women and Infant Center.
Hatcher said she was told the odds were 1 in 50 million. The last widely known case in Bangladesh was in 2019, when Arifa Sultana, then 20, gave birth to healthy twins 26 days apart.
