Desmond Akawor has resigned as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State after Bola Tinubu appointed him Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

In his resignation letter dated November 22, 2023, and addressed to the acting National Chairman of PDP, Ambassador Umaru Damagun, Akawor said his resignation is linked to his appointment.

He noted that he has since handed over the position to his deputy, Aaron Chukwuemeka.

The letter said: “I was recently nominated for federal appointment to the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission as Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State.

“After consulting my leaders and family, I accepted this opportunity to serve our country, which I consider a national service.

“Consequently, I resigned from my position as Chairman of the Rivers State Party of our great party – the PDP, and immediately handed over all duties to the Vice Chairman of the party, Aaron Chukwuemeka, who initiated action in this place.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have steered the ship of our great party, the PDP, at the state level from 2020 to 2023, and especially grateful for your support and the support of the national body during my tenure.

“My family and I are extremely grateful to Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, for his consideration and for finding me worthy to serve in this role.

“I remain committed to the ideals of our party at all times and will continue to be available to provide, guide and support all party matters whenever called upon.”

Akawor’s resignation letter emerged on Friday, November 24, hours after Tinubu appointed him to serve as Federal Commissioner of the Revenue, Mobilization and Allocation Commission, pending Senate confirmation.
