AGF Fagbemi seeks further funding in 2024 budget

The Federation's Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi called for further funding for the ministry to ensure improved performance in 2024.

Fagbemi said this on Monday in Abuja when he reviewed the department’s 2023 budget performance and defended the 2024 budget before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The ministry said 3.3 billion naira was allocated for capital expenditure and 4.6 billion naira for recurrent expenditure in 2023.

According to the AGF, with less than 30 days left until the end of 2023, the ministry has announced only 617 million naira in capital expenditure and 2.734 billion naira in recurrent expenditure.
He said this had a significant impact on the ministry's performance.

The minister said the ministry was determined to achieve a paradigm shift in 2024, noting that the 2024 budget had allocated N5.3 billion for capital expenditure and N8.8 billion for recurrent expenditure.

He asked the Committee to support the Department as it is fundamental to advancing the current government's justice sector roadmap.

Mr Fagbemi said legal and judicial reform was a critical priority area under the President's eight-point agenda.

“To ensure the safety and confidence of judicial personnel as well as trial venues, the Department of Justice must charter aircraft to airlift judicial personnel.

“The Department is also devoting significant resources to the provision and upgrading of infrastructure facilities at various venues to make them fit for purpose,” he said.
