President furious, slams Obasanjo for comments about democracy

Africa's current debt will be repaid over generations – Obasanjo

Nigeria's former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, said the next generation of Africans has no choice but to help repay the debt burden incurred by current leaders.

It will be recalled that President Obasanjo secured debt relief for Nigeria in 2003, as did the Algerian president in the same period.

However, Obasanjo pointed out that if the debt cancellation to date is this bad, it would be nearly impossible for any administration to take similar steps on the continent.

Mr. Obasanjo said this at an interaction program with the 2023 awardees of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, an initiative of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

Mr. Obasanjo noted that debt constitutes an albatross for any economy and that debt is a trap that individuals and nations must not fall into.

The former president, who argued that the biggest problem facing the continent is leadership, stressed that “the next generation has no choice but to pay the current debts owed by the various countries of the continent.”

He commended Pastor Oyakhilome for the efforts put into leadership development, adding that the country needs more people like him to address the leadership crisis facing the continent.

Obasanjo highlighted the qualities of a leader during the Q&A, saying, “Leaders must be able to lead by example, be bold and courageous in making decisions, accept and learn from mistakes, and have realistic dreams.'' It must be done.”
