African Games: Nigeria volleyball team earns automatic qualification

The Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVF) on Friday announced that the country's men's and women's volleyball teams have qualified for the 13th Ghana 2024 African Championships.

Martin Merandi, the federation's technical director, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

Merandi said Benin Republic did not respect their participation in the match, so they were given automatic qualification.

He said the inability of the Republic of Benin to fund the team's travel expenses was cited as a reason for not fulfilling the mission.

“This is Zone 3 in West Africa. We were scheduled to play Benin Republic and had their guarantees, but we withdrew at the last minute.

“West Africa Zonal President Ali Yaro has written to the African Volleyball Confederation stating that the Nigerian volleyball team has automatically qualified.

“Therefore, we had to organize an exhibition match with selected players from Lagos. This is their first match since entering the camp, but we are optimistic that they will perform well in the subsequent friendlies.” ” he said.

The men's team, led by Moses Gana, defeated the Lagos State volleyball team 3-0 in three games, 30-28, 25-21, 25-22.
