AFCON: They gave us a real lesson – Ivorian coach explains why Equatorial Guinea won 4-0

Ivory Coast head coach Jean-Louis Gasset has explained the reason for Monday's 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 African Cup of Nations AFCON draw.

Gassett, who described the result as a nightmare, suggested Ivory Coast were not efficient in front of goal against Equatorial Guinea.

He says Equatorial Guinea taught the team a real lesson.

“It's a nightmare,” Gassett said in the postgame press conference.

“We have prepared well for this game and we were able to go into this game well by chasing them and setting the pace.

“We had possession of the ball and had some chances, but we couldn't score.On the other hand, for our opponents, the few chances they had led to goals.

“In football you have to be efficient. Equatorial Guinea gave us a lesson in realism.”

He added: “Do you still believe you're eligible?” clearly.

“We won one out of three games and we have people behind us rooting for us. But waiting for other people's results is not a good sign.”

Ivory Coast will secure a place in the Round of 16 as one of the top four teams in third place, even if Cameroon fails to beat Gambia on Tuesday.
