AFCON 2023: CAF President promises first-class tournament

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has pledged to ensure first-class organization and security for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Motsepe made the assertion on Friday at a press conference in Abidjan ahead of Saturday's kick-off of the biennial continental exhibition.

He said CAF was working around the clock with the host country to ensure a worthy Games and avoid the mistakes of the previous Games in Cameroon.

“I am satisfied that there is a huge amount of determination and commitment and I think we are on the right path.

“The accident in Cameroon was completely avoidable.

“We are satisfied that the appropriate steps were taken to completely avoid the painful experience we had in Cameroon,” he said.

DAILY POST reports that the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon ended with eight fans killed and others injured due to crowding at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde during the Round of 16 match between Cameroon and Comoros. It was reported that the event was ruined.

The CAF boss said efforts were being made to ensure a smooth tournament.
