83 Nigerian academics depart for Morocco under bilateral education agreement
Eighty-three Nigerian academics have departed for Morocco under the Federal Ministry of Education’s bilateral education agreement.
Minister of Education Tahir Mamman said the academics were selected in accordance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Hope policy and will carry out research in various fields in Morocco.
“Your selection as scholars is part of a broader plan to deepen President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Hope Agenda for GCFR, ensuring that talented Nigerians, especially those in Nigeria, can afford to study programs not readily available in Nigeria. This will ensure that those who lack the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies are able to obtain scholarships to help meet Nigeria’s development challenges,” Mamman said.
Mamman noted that the ministry is further increasing the number of development partners, with several countries now offering scholarships to Nigerian students.
“Active countries include Hungary, China, Russia, Algeria, Romania, Morocco, Serbia, Mexico, Egypt, and Venezuela. Less active countries include Macedonia, Poland, South Korea, Greece, and Japan. , Turkey, etc.,” he added.
He also noted that Nigeria had also provided scholarships to China and Romania in the past to reciprocate their goodwill, and that the agreement was in line with the interest of the country and other countries. He also revealed that he is thinking of restarting it.
The Minister, however, urged the departing scholars to represent Nigeria with pride and make the most of their educational opportunities.
Mamman advised them to adapt to the new cultural environment, abide by local laws and regulations, and contact the Nigerian Embassy in Rabat for support and guidance.
“So, I must advise you not to think of this as freedom and start doing things that are shameful to yourselves, your parents and your country. Nigeria has invested a lot in you and you will not see a return on that investment We look forward to seeing you come back and move the country forward.
“Life in a foreign land is very different from life in Nigeria. No matter where you study, you have to learn to follow its rules. For those of you who are going to study in the same place, there is a brotherly keeper. I advise you to learn to be.
