44-year-old man drowns in Ilorin


An unnamed 44-year-old man drowned at Agba Dam in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Monday.

According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, the incident occurred at about 10:50am.

He said: “The fire department responded to a distress call from Mr. Onikepe Bolaji, who said a body had been found at Agba Dam. Immediately upon arrival, the firefighters inflated their boats and began rescue operations.

“They successfully recovered the body of a 44-year-old man who drowned. The expertise of the rescue team was evident and the recovered body was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, DSP Achimugu Samuel.”

A Fire and Disaster Management Agency spokesperson said those at the scene included Water Resources Secretary Usman Radhe and the Permanent Secretary of the Water Resources Minister.

The Chief Secretary praised the exemplary performance of the rescue teams in handling the situation.

The Kwara State Fire Service Commissioner, Prince Farade John Olumuyiwa, expressed sadness over the incident and called on the public to be more vigilant in neighboring areas to prevent similar incidents.
