A group, Centre for Democracy and Development on Saturday, raised concerns over the credibility of the governorship election citing the alleged public sale of votes, violence, and intimidation in different states.
According to the organisation, although the Independent National Electoral Commission did better in the area of deployment of materials and manpower, leading to the prompt arrival of poll officials for the elections, there were occasional issues of the malfunction of the bi-modal voter accreditation system.
The CDD raised the issues in its preliminary statement on the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, issued by its Executive Director, Idayat Hassan.
She said, “In the North-West, observers in all seven states reported increased reports of vote trading, primarily by political party agents. Money was used alongside other materials such as food items, wrappers, and a ‘credit voucher’ were used to buy votes and those items were to be redeemed after the results.
“Similarly in the North-East, political party agents in Taraba (State) infiltrated the queue, pretended to be voters, and used the chance to offer cash for votes.
“In the South-East, there were reports of APGA and LP party agents using materials, phones, and other souvenirs to entice voters in Anambra state.
