The status of Lagos as Nigeria’s Center of Excellence makes the seat of the governor of the state a hot cake.
Tens of Lagosians are jostling for the exalted office in today’s governorship election, which is looking to be the most keenly contested in the history of the state.
Popular among the contestants are the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwaolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdul-Azeez Adediran (popularly called ‘Jandor’) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, alias GRV of the Labour Party (LP).
If the result of the presidential election in the state was anything to go by, then the two major parties; APC and PDP should be wary of the Labour Party which is still basking in the euphoria of the Obidient tsunami.
Recall that Peter Obi of the Labour Party won the presidential election in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous state despite triumphing in nine local government areas as against eleven won by Bola Tinubu of the APC who is a former governor of the state.
Obi polled 582,454 votes to defeat Tinubu, who scored 572, 606 votes by a slim margin.
Atiku Abubakar of the PDP came a distant third with 75,750 votes.
The local government areas where Obi won were Kosofe, Eti-Osa, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin, Somolu, Ikeja, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo.
Tinubu won Lagos Island, Ibeju-Lekki, Apapa, Lagos Mainland, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry, Agege, Mushin, and Surulere local government areas.
The results of the presidential election from the various local government areas could be an insight into the outcome of the March 18 governorship election.
Also, the local governments won by each party could be valuable hints of the strongholds of the parties.
Seeing that the PDP performed poorly in the presidential election in the state, one may be tempted to say that the chances of the governorship candidate of the party, Jandor are slimmer than the APC and LP candidates.
Despite the APC losing the presidential election to the Labour Party in the state, the incumbency factor makes Governor Sanwaolu a top favorite. Close to him is the LP candidate, GRV who ran his campaign in a Peter Obi-esque (social media/youth movement).
