Save the Children International (SCI) has revealed that approximately 17.6 million children worldwide will be born into hunger in 2023.

Vishna Shah Little, Regional Director of Advocacy, Campaigns, Communications and Media for Save the Children in West and Central Africa, said: “This year, more than 17 million newborns will be born into a world where their childhoods will be eroded by hunger. Starvation will destroy their dreams, silence their play, disrupt their education, and threaten their lives.”
She said: “The future of these children is already at risk before they take their first breath. We must protect their childhood and future before it is too late.”
The study found that around 1.5 million babies are expected to be born hungry in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), making this year the highest number of malnourished babies born. This is the highest number ever in the country. Since FAO records began in 2001.
Projections estimate that 6.6 million children under the age of five will be undernourished in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2023.
