10 infants die in our camp due to malnutrition – Walu IDP official
More than 10 infants have reportedly died from complications related to malnutrition at the Waru Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The camp’s female leader, Fatima Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.
Muhammad said this figure has been recorded since the camp was established in 2013.
She said the issue of malnutrition in infants and children remained a source of concern for many families in the camp.
“As I speak to you now, a nursing mother recently died in this camp.
“As you know, one of our big problems in this camp is the lack of proper medical equipment, portable drinking water, and toilet facilities.
“Due to the deteriorating toilet conditions here, many women are suffering from infections, some of whom have developed chronic infections to the point where they are unable to have children,” she said.
The women leaders appealed to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for assistance, but said the situation required urgent action.
“One of our basic needs is medical facilities, even though some of us used to run businesses from our homes before the insurgency forced us out of different communities. Although it is temporary.
“When we previously received medical and material support from organizations such as Imaan Suleiman, former Secretary General of the Refugee Commission, she supported us greatly and we are grateful to her. doing.
“But since they left, we have not received any donations from any organization so far.
“But there are many of us in this camp, nearly 3,870 people.
“Even with the empowerment scheme that former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya brought to us, only 17 people of this population benefited.
“The empowerment program was mainly aimed at skill acquisition, as some of us were trained in tailoring and given sewing machines,” she said.
